If you have experienced problems with your Mac and have had to take it in for servicing, be sure to check your system's serial number when you get it back, especially if the service required a logic board replacement. While most of the time applications and services you use in your Mac will be relatively independent from the hardware setup, there are some instances where specific software may matter.

When logic boards are replaced in a system, the technician is supposed to update its serial number to match that of the Mac's chassis. If that is overlooked, some services, such as FaceTime, may not work properly.
Therefore, be sure to check your system's serial number if it has been repaired to ensure that it matches the one printed on the chassis of your system.
If you can't boot your Mac If your Mac is not working, the serial number is printed on the computer casing but the location varies. Here are the main locations of serial numbers on Apple computers. Unibody MacBook Pro - Laser etched onto the base. MacBook, Early MacBook Pro, PowerBook G4 - Inside the main battery bay. Remove battery to locate. iBook (White) - Under the keyboard. To lift keyboard, pull back on the release tabs between the F-keys.
Intel iMac, iMac G5 - Underside of the foot/stand. iMac G4, iMac G3 - Underside of the iMac.
Mac mini - On the underside of the Mac mini. Mac Pro 2006-2012 - On rear of machine near graphics card ports.

Apple Serial Number Lookup Welcome to MacUpgrades Serial Number Checker. Please input your Mac's serial number below - this can be found on a sticker on the Mac. You can also find it in Apple System Profiler: Select the Apple Menu About This Mac, then (depending on the version of OSX you are running) click the System Report button or the More Info button. This brings up System Profiler (or on some versions another window, on which you should then click 'System Report'), and on the Hardware Overview that is displayed by default in the right-hand panel you should see your serial number, and be able to copy/paste it.
